Exchange program for journalists

Capacity Building and journalistic networks in the Southern Caucasus

DIN 6357 copy1Background: Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan are facing major political challenges that have immense implications on the issues of human rights, female empowerment and gender justice. As different as the respective current political challenges in the countries are, the consequences for women's and LGBTQ* rights can be seen clearly in all cases. Political instability is a major obstacle to any form of social reform and change, which vulnerable groups in particular are so desperately in need of. Domestic violence, gender-related abortions, under-representation in all areas of the professional world and society, as well as long-held stereotypes are the central challenges of women in the Southern Caucasus. For the LGBTQ* community, hate crime, violence on the streets, a taboo and, in many cases, a lack of visibility in all political and social discourses are daily practice.

The project seeks to empower journalists to confront disinformation and develop alternative and transnational narratives in the South Caucasus on the issues of human rights, gender justice, LGBTQ* and women's rights. In cooperation with the media platform Chai Khana, we would like to contribute to the visibility of human rights, LGBTQ* issues and female empowerment in journalism in the countries of the Southern Caucasus. The research trip will consist of networking meetings with colleagues and discussions with NGOs relevant to the topics as well as representatives from politics, media, culture and society. Journalists from Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan will also participate in the trip and provide cross-border perspectives on the topics.
